<RecipeText>rinse beans and put them in a large pot with onion, garlic, bay leaves, carrots, and ham.  Add water to cover.  Bring to a boil, reduce to simmer, and cook a long time.  All day in  crock pot or 2-3 hours on the stove.

Serve over rice.
