Fruit cobblers are simple and quick to prepare and you can make them using almost any type of fruit. Peaches are an especially common fruit for cobbler. Peaches are high in vitamins A and C and are in season during the summer months. When choosing peaches for your cobbler, opt for soft, fragrant peaches that are yellow or cream-colored near the stem. Green skin near the stem indicates that the fruit is not ripe enough. Step 1 Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Place 1/4 cup butter in an oven-safe 9-by-13-inch baking dish. Place the baking dish in the oven while it's preheating to melt the butter. Slice around each peach to separate it into two halves. Pop the pit out with the tip of the knife. Slice the peaches into small, bite-size chunks. Step 3 Mix the peach chunks with 3/4 cup of sugar in a large bowl. Step 4 Combine 3/4 cup of flour, 3/4 cup of sugar, baking powder and salt in a large bowl. Add milk to the dry mixture and mix thoroughly. Step 5 Remove the pan with melted butter from the oven. Add the fruit mixture and spread it evenly with a rubber-tipped spatula. Step 6 Pour the batter directly onto the fruit. Do not stir the batter around in the fruit or try to spread it on top. Step 7 Place the pan in the oven and bake the cobbler for 40 to 50 minutes. The batter will puff up and turn golden brown and cracks will begin to develop. Step 8 Remove it from the oven and serve immediately.
