<IngredientText>Instructions: Cream the sugar and shortening together.
Sift the spices and the flour and baking powder together. Beat the teaspoon of soda into the molasses until it is light and fluffy, and add to the shortening and sugar.
Add the 1/2 teaspoon soda into the boiling water, then add it alternately with the sifted dry ingredients.
Fold in the beaten egg when it is all well mixed, pour into a greased and floured pan 8 x 13" and bake about 20 minutes at 325 F. This mixture will seem to be too thin to make a cake, but DO NOT increase the quantity of flour, as many cooks have tried to do.

Notes:	I've reduced the water in this recipe from 1 1/2 cups to 1 1/4, seems to give the cake more body.
This is a weird recipe. The baking soda and creaming step seem to be aiming at developing lots of small bubbles, leading to a delicate texture, but the addition of nearly boiling water melts the butter, destroying this structure. I am going to try boiling the water, adding the soda, and then allowing the water to come to room temperature.</IngredientText>
