    3  eggs
    3/4 lb  powdered sugar, (3 cups)
    1/2 teaspoon  cinnamon
    1/4 teaspoon  each, cloves, nutmeg, and salt
    3/4 cup  finely cut candied fruit
    1/2 cup  finely cut nutmeats
finely grated rind of 1/2 lemon
    2 1/4 cups  flour
    1/2 teaspoon  baking soda
Beat eggs with electric mixer until light. Gradually add powdered sugar. Continue to beat at high speed about 15 minutes until it is very thick. Add flour a little at a time, mixed with salt, baking soda, spices, and grated lemon rind. Let the dough rest for 10 minutes before rolling it out. Take about 1/3 of it at a time and roll it until it is 1/4 inches thick. Cut the dough in squares and place on a lightly floured surface. Cover with a towel and let it stand overnight. Bake at 300 degrees for about 10 minutes, until it is a light straw color. When cool, frost with thin sugar icing.
      Frosting

Use 3/4 tablespoons butter, hot water, and 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla or lemon juice plus 2 1/2 cups of powdered sugar for frosting.
