    12 slices  day-old baguette, cut into 3/4 inch pieces
    4  eggs, at room temperature
    1/2 C  firmly packed brown sugar
    3/4 tsp  vanilla
    1/2 tsp  cinnamon
    pinch  nutmeg
    pinch  salt
    4 C  milk
    1/4 C  dried cranberries or raisins
    1/8 C  powdered sugar

Lightly butter 8 inch baking dish. Spread bread cubes in it. Whisk together eggs, brown sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Pour in milk and whisk together. Pour over bread and let stand, pressing down occasionally, until it is evenly coated (abt. 20minutes). Sprinkle with cranberries or raisins if desired. Bake at 350 till browned. Sprinkle with powdered sugar.
