    4 medium  apples, peeled, cut into fourths
    1/2 cup  water
    1/2 cup  brown sugar, or 1/3 - 1/2 cup white sugar
    1/4 t.  cinnamon
    1/8 t.  nutmeg
    1 pinch  salt

1. Heat apples and water to boiling over medium heat.
2. Simmer, uncovered, stirring occasionally to break up apples, until tender, 5 - 10 minutes.
3. Stir in sugar and spices.
4. Heat to boiling; boil and stir for 1 minute.
