    2 tbsp  vegetable oil
    2 tbsp  trans-free margarine
    3  onions, thinly sliced
    1 tbsp  sugar
    1 tsp  salt
    2 tbsp  all-purpose flour
    4 cups  reduced-sodium vegetable broth
    1/2 cup  dry white wine,, (optional)
    8 slices  crusty French bread
    1/2 cup  grated reduced-fat Swiss
      Parmesan cheese, alternative
DIRECTIONS Heat oil and margarine in large skillet over medium-high heat. Add onions and saute, covered, until soft. Add sugar and salt. Cook, uncovered, 15 more minutes. Stir in flour and cook 3 more minutes. Stir onion mixture, broth, and wine, if using, in 4-quart or larger slow cooker. Cover. Cook on low 6 to 8 hours. Toast bread.
