Total time:
Source:

    1-1/2 cups  shortening
    2 cups  sugar
    2  eggs
    1/2 cup  molasses
    4 cups  all-purpose flour
    1/4 teaspoon  salt
    1 tablespoon  ground cloves
    1 tablespoon  ground ginger
    1 tablespoon  ground cinnamon
    2 teaspoons  baking soda

Course Sugar

1. Cream shortening and sugar together. Add eggs and molasses to creamed mixture.
2. In a separate bowl, mix together dry ingredients. Make sure you mix well. Add dry mixture to cream mixture 1 cup at a time until well blended.
3. Using a (heaping) teaspoon or tablespoon scoop out dough and roll in your hands to form balls. Dip balls on one side only into course sugar (regular sugar works fine too) and place plain side down onto un-greased cookie sheet.
4. Bake @ 300 degrees F for 17 minutes.
5. Allow to cool on cookie sheet for 5 minutes; remove and place on clean dish towel for 10 minutes. Then move to wire rack until COMPLETELY cooled. Stores best in tin can with tight fitting lid.

*NOTE- If you use a heaping teaspoon to form balls, it yields 5 dozen cookies
