    2 cups  quick-cooking rolled oats, (not instant)
    1/2 cup  shredded coconut
    1/2 cup  raisins
      chopped dates, alternative
    1/4 cup  chopped walnuts
    2 large  ripe bananas, mashed
    1/4 cup  unsweetened applesauce, (optional; see note)
    1 tablespoon  date sugar, (optional; see note)

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Mix all the ingredients in a large bowl until well combined. Press into a 9-by-9-inch baking pan and bake for 30 minutes. Cool on a wire rack. When cool, cut into squares or bars.
