1. You need about 8-10 quart size 32 oz. WIDE MOUTH glass mason jars with lids. (You can buy these at walmart or the grocery store). For the cake and icing I just do a boxed cake mix and get one or two betty crocker/ pillsbury icing containers. But you can probably make any cake recipie you or your soldier prefer. 2. Mix the cake batter and as the oven preheats, put a little oil of your choice in each jar, just enough to cover the bottom. Roll the jars so that the oil begins to cover the sides of the jars. This will help the cake slide out of the jars once shipped to your soldier and prevent sticking. (There is no measurement for the oil. you want enough to cover the bottom and bit to cover the sides but too much will saturate the cake.) 3. Fill the jars about 1/3 of the way with the cake batter, leaving room for it to rise during baking. 4. Place the jars on a large cookie sheet. Insert cookie sheet with jars on it into oven and cook as directed on box/ recipie. I check them frequently and pull them out if they begin to turn brown on top. 5. While the cakes are baking, put the lids (both parts- the flat top piece and the round screw on part) into a pot on the stove with water and bring to a light boil. 6. Once the cakes are finished baking, pull the cookie sheet with jars on it out of the oven. And use tongs to extract lids from boiling water and begin putting them onto the jars and oven mits for screwing them (since they are boiling they will be hot). You don't have to get them super tight because as the cakes cool you will hear the lids start popping. This means they are sealing and they will stay fresh in the box untill your soldier opens them. 7. Let cakes cool. Decorate if you wish. Check lids to make sure they are screwed securely. Do not open them or you will break the seal.
