Mom's Tomato Sauce and Meatballs

2 large | Hunts can of tomatoes, (pear-shaped), strain |
1 large can | tomato purée |
1 small can | tomato paste |
2 large cans | water |
1 | onion, chopped |
2 cloves | garlic, minced |
1 pound | ground round |
1 | pork steak or pork rib |
1 pound | Italian sausage |
1 tablespoon | salt |
½ tablespoon | pepper |
1 teaspoon | sweet basil |
Put tomatoes (strained), purée, paste, and water in a very large pot. Bring to boil. Sauté onion, garlic, and brown the ground round, the pork steak or rib, and the Italian sausage. Add to other pot. Cook 1 hour at medium to high heat and then simmer for 2 hours. Add salt, pepper, basil. MEATBALLS | |

2 slices | bread, wet and shredded |
1 | egg |
3 tablespoons | cheese, grated |

Mix thoroughly, shape into meatballs, brown and add to sauce while simmering. You can add chopped parsley, onions, 1 cup or more of bread crumbs. Mix well.
Tina Viviano vouches for the authenticity of this recipe. She says, "I followed mom around the kitchen and got this one. I've seen others, but this really tastes like hers and smells like it too!" My version is slightly different, as is Carme's, as is Mary Jo's, etc. etc. etc.
