    2 cups  butter, softened
    1 cup  sugar
    1 teaspoon  vanilla extract
    4 cups  all-purpose flour
      Colored sugar, optional

1: In a large mixing bowl, cream butter and sugar. Add vanilla and mix well. Gradually add flour, mix until dough forms a ball.
2: On a lightly floured surface, roll out dough to 1/2 inch thickness. Cut into 1 1/2 inch shapes. Place on ungreased baking sheets; sprinkle with colored sugar if desired.
3: Bake at 325 F for 14-18 minutes or until edges are lightly browned. Remove to wire racks.
