Mum's Caramel Dumplings

| SHORTNING | |
| 1 1/4 cups | self raising flour |
| Pinch | salt |
| 1oz | butter |
| 1/3 cup | sugar |
| 1 teaspoon | vanilla |
| 1/3 cup | milk |
| SAUCE | |
| 1oz | butter |
| 1 1/2 cups | brown sugar |
| Pinch | salt |
| 1 1/2 cups | water |
Method:
1. Rub butter into flour
2. Mix other SHORTNING ingredients into a stiff dough
3. For sauce: Put all sauce ingredients into a saucepan and bring to the boil.
4. Drop balls of dough into the boiling sauce.
5. Simmer for 20 minutes.
6. Serve with cream or ice cream or both!
