Topic Displaying all 3 posts. Ellie Courtney We lived in France the past 2 years. I wanted to make a mock "beef bourguignon" using my crock pot. I created this recipe and everyone loves it. Make sure you serve it with a good bread to soak up all the juices. It's delicious. It takes about 15 minutes to prepare, but well worth it at the end of the day! French Stew 1 family pack of stew meat | |
1 large | onion- thinly sliced |
2 cups | flour |
Salt | |
Pepper | |
Dried Thyme | |
1 cup | Red Wine |
Carrots | |
mushrooms, alternative |
Mashed Potatoes or Egg Noodles to serve with it
1. Thinly slice the onion, set aside.
2. In a shallow bowl or plate combine the flour, salt & pepper and thyme. (Just add a good amount of each)
3. Heat up a large skillet on med-high with olive oil to coat. Dredge the meat cubes in the flour mixture. Shake off excess. Place in hot pan and sear on 2 sides. Remove to crock pot. I usually have to do two batches.
3. Dredge the onion slices in the flour mixture. Add to the pan. We want to use all that good drippings from the meat and layer the flavors. Cook the onions for about 5 mins. They will begin to soften and brown.
4. Add the wine to the pan and reduce for a few minutes. It will become a thick mixture from the oil and onions. Pour over the meat in the crock pot. Add 1/2 c. water to the crock pot and a little more of the salt, pepper and thyme. Cook on low for 8-10 hours. Do not stir the stew at any point! Now leave the house so you are not tempted all day to eat it!
5. About 2-3 hours before serving add carrots (or sliced mushrooms). Make mashed potatoes or egg noodles to serve with it. Pour the stew over the the potatoes or noodles. Serve with a slice of bread and a salad.
*Tip- I don't care to drink wine so I buy the small bottles of wine (they come in a four pk. for about $5.) Each bottle is the perfect size for this stew.)
*I prefer mashed potatoes with this!
