| 18 1/2 oz. | chocolate cake mix |
| 3.9 oz. pkg. | instant chocolate pudding mix |
| 2 1/2 c. | milk, divided |
| 1/3 c. | oil |
| 3.4 oz. pkg. | instant vanilla pudding |
| 1/2 c. | shortening |
| 1/2 c. | margarine, softened |
| 1 c. | powdered sugar |
| 1 tsp. | vanilla |
| opt. | additional powdered sugar |
Combine cake mix, chocolate pudding mix, 1 1/2 c. milk and oil. Beat with an electric mixer on high speed for 4 minutes. Spread in 2 greased and floured 9" round cake pans. Bake at 350 degrees for 20-25 minutes. Cool layers on a wire rack. For filling, prepare vanilla pudding mix with remaining milk; chill until very cold. Blend shortening and margarine; add chilled pudding, powdered sugar and vanilla. Beat with an electric mixer on high speed for 10 minutes. Place one layer on a plate; spread with filling. Add second layer on top; sprinkle with powdered sugar if desired.
