Hearty Lentil Soup

    2 cups  dry lentils, rinsed
    1 cup  chopped carrots
    1 cup  chopped onion
    1 cup  chopped celery
    2 to 3 cloves  garlic, peeled
    1 to 2  bay leaves
    ½ teaspoon  salt
    ½ teaspoon  dried marjoram
    ¼ teaspoon  white pepper
    1 (10.5-ounce) can  vegetable broth

1 meaty ham bone, about 1 pound

Put the lentils in the slow cooker. Add the remaining ingredients, including 6 cups water and cover with the lid. Cook on low for 8 to 10 hours. Lift out the ham bone
and remove all the meat from the bone. Discard the bone and return the meat to the soup. Adjust the seasonings with additional salt and pepper, if necessary.
Remove and discard the bay leaves before serving.
