Green Beans with Bacon

1-1/2 lbs | green beans |
3 slices | bacon, coarsely chopped |
1 medium | red onion, thinly sliced, (about 1 cup) |
2 tsp | sugar |
1 clove | garlic, minced |
1/2 tsp | salt |
1/8 tsp | crushed red pepper flakes |
2 Tbsp | red wine vinegar |
Bring pot of salted water to boil. Add beans; cook until tender, 7-8 minutes. Drain; reserve. Meanwhile, in skillet over medium-high heat cook bacon until crisp, stirring occasionally, 3-4 minutes; drain on paper towels. Reduce heat to medium-low. To bacon fat in skillet add onion, sugar, garlic, salt and pepper flakes. Cook, stirring occasionally, until tender, 3-4 minutes. Add vinegar; cook 1 minute, scraping up bits from bottom. Toss beans with onion mixture. Sprinkle with reserved bacon.
