Chocolate Caramel Cake

1 package | chocolate cake mix, 18 to 19 ounces |
12 ounces | Caramel, unwrap |
1/2 cup | butter |
1 can | sweetened condensed milk 14 ounces |
1 cup | pecans, coarsely chopped |
Prepare cake mix per package directions. Pour 2 cups of batter into greased 9x13 pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 15 minutes. Meanwhile in a saucepan, using low heat, melt caramels and butter. Remove from heat and add sweetened condensed milk. Mix well spread caramel mixture evenly over cake. Spread remaining cake batter over caramel mix, top with nuts. Return to oven. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 to 35 min. longer or until cake springs back when lightly touched. When cake is removed from oven and still hot, sprinkle chocolate chips on top of cake. Serves 12 preparation time 20 min. start to finish time for baking 1 hour 10 min.
