Emily's Fresh Apple cake

Combine 1 cup sugar, 2 cups diced apples (not peeled). Let stand 5-10 minutes. Add one egg. Stir thoroughly, then add 1 c flour, 1 t cinnamon and 1 t baking soda. Pour into 8" square pan greased. Bake at 350 for 30-40 minutes. |
Butter sauce- combine 1/2 c brown sugar, 1/2 c sugar and 1/3 c flour. Slowly add 1/2 c water.
Cook over low heat stirring constantly until thick. Remove from heat. Add 1/2 t vanilla and 1/2 c butter. Stir until melted. Pour over warm cake.
